Every crop makes a noise. Corn rustles, livestock calls, tractors run. Kelp makes almost none — just the faint creak of a rope and the water moving through a thousand blades.

No input, no sound

There is no engine running in a kelp field. No irrigation, no feed truck, no tiller. The only machinery is the boat, and it is gone for days at a time. The farm is quieter than the weather around it.

The loudest part is the harvest

Once a season, the winch whines and the deck fills with wet green. For about two weeks it sounds like a farm. Then the ropes go back in, and it is quiet again until winter.
