Seedling nursery

We grow seed on spools in the hatchery, then spool out kilometers of line.

From spore to spool

Kelp starts small — smaller than a pinhead. We settle microscopic spores onto twine in the hatchery, coax them into a visible fuzz, and wind the whole thing onto spools that go to sea.

stage what happens
spore settled onto seeded twine
germling a 2 mm fuzz, weeks in the tank
spool-out twine wrapped onto 300 m spools
outplant spooled line married to the longline

The nursery

Our hatchery runs on filtered seawater and patience. Cold tanks, dim light, and a strict schedule — the seedlings are the whole crop, a season before the boat ever leaves the dock.
